  • Alright! Confession time: I've been trying to revive 1LDK again. I figured since I've gotten better at compression and effects and mixing and the like, surely I could make it work!

    I could not.
Back into the void it goes. Forever. :kaito_lili:

Sorry to cut in, but people don't have a problem with changing the key in covers -- utaites do it all the time. You just have to make sure that if you're lowering one part, you have to lower all parts and also the instrumental, otherwise it'll just clash and sound... off key.

Nah its alright, I get that youre frustrated. Last thing I can think of is to lower it an octave? Sometimes it doesnt work cuz it wont give you the same tone from the loid that youre looking for but sometimes it works just fine, also if it wont be too jarring perhaps only lower the verses an octave??

@Rylitah See, I know utaites do it frequently, but whenever the key is changed for a synth cover, I tend to see it get harsh reactions for "not sounding right". I'm already a low-quality cover artist with few viewers, I don't wanna be hated even more, so I tend to get paranoid about these kinds of things. 😅 Still, I might go ahead and try!

@patuk I'll probably stick to lowering it a few keys... neither of their voices are low enough to handle a whole octave unless I do some massive tweaking to their GEN parameters. Thank you for listening to me rant. I'm gonna try again!
I found a really cool DAW that has a pretty smooth interface, runs well, comes with some plugins, and also accepts third-party plugins! The catch: it only accepts 32-bit plugins, and Z-Noise is exclusively 64-bit.

I still haven't figured out why Cakewalk's plugins won't work.

    And the search fruitlessly continues.

Ohm Studio. You have to register, but then you can use the DAW as you please. It's actually pretty cool: you can invite people to join in on your session so you can chat and collaborate. Being a socially-anxious laughingstock of a cover artist, I don't really get anything out of that, but I still think it's pretty cool.

That sounds super cool, aside from the 32-bit only thing. I'll have to check it out!
You know what's surprisingly hard to find? Bookends. Like, basic, flat, metal bookends. I've been looking for some for my bookshelf because it's a cheap plastic contraption from Lowe's and doesn't have sides, but all I can find are really big, bulky, expensive, decorative bookends that take up half the shelf.

I managed to find a wire mesh tray for $3 at Savers, though, so I put my Vocaloids (and Haiyi) in it because they're on the top shelf and most susceptible to tipping over due to being so lightweight, but I still have to put a lotion bottle and a random glass candle holder against one end to keep them upright.

    Freaking bookends, man.

Holy heck, me and my sister had this SAME PROBLEM! We couldn't find ANY anywhere in person. Ended up getting these cheap ones (compared to other sellers) on Amazon and have bought them multiple times (can't help being a book worm)
You know what I suddenly want more than anything? To make a Big Al cover of “Who I’d Be” from Shrek the Musical. He would SLAY on that song.

I dropped $30 on a recommended noise-removal plugin because, when used correctly, it helps Oliver sound Not Raspy. The problem is, no matter how many tutorials I watch and how closely to the letter I follow them, nothing happens. No noise profile is captured, and so Oliver sounds... well, the way you'd expect Oliver to sound in the hands of a shitty Vocaloid ameateur.
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
That still didn't work. It just shows up as a single straight line, and no amount of tinkering with it changes the way it sounds whatsoever.

It's a duet, so there's stretches of silence between Oliver's parts, and there's a little bit of reverb because I applied it in Vocaloid and then exported the vocal tracks into Cakewalk. Could that be the problem?

parallax_fifths said it perfectly. Just hit learn and play it for a while then extract and them play with the threshold untill you can only hear noise and not words. You might need to use a better daw like reaper idk.

Also it works best with raw dry vocals
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
You guys are lifesavers! It worked in Reaper. Now to figure out why it wasn't working in Cakewalk...
Welp. I'm sick. It's just a cold, but it's enough that I didn't sleep again, and I don't know if I'll have the oomph to go to class today.

Well, if I'm gonna stay home throwing back Vitamin C shots all day, I might as well try to make it productive. Maybe I'll catch up on that one class and get a cover done, or at least make a dent in that much.
YES! Cakewalk's finally working with me! I haven't tried closing out and reloading it to see if Piapro will cause it to crash again, but right now I'm just hoping for the best.
I've been trying to mess around with new DAWs, but

1.) Cakewalk, once I finally managed to update and load Piapro into it, became unresponsive when I tried to load it.
2.) Tracktion makes a hissing noise every few seconds. Registering was supposed to solve the problem, but apparently it does that when you have an unregistered plugin loaded, which Piapro I suppose is, and how the hell do I register plugins?
3.) I can't figure out how to load plugins into Podium, and I've used enough Dumbass Pass cards in the past two days to disqualify me from legally being a dumbass for the next year.

Am I really that bad of a person? That my best friend readily ditches me for someone new and I'm too stupid to figure out something that's supposed to be fun? Aside from stubbornly remaining alive, what have I done wrong?

Me: "You've got at least three heavily-tuned covers that need finished. Work on those a bit maybe?"

The voice in the back of my head: "Imagine Len and Oliver singing 'Smile Again'"

Me, slamming on the breaks in the middle of the Walmart parking lot: "Oh my God imagine Len and Oliver singing 'Smile Again'"
So I somehow forgot I'd signed up for a certain class (it's online-only and the professor never sent out the mandatory "Hey, welcome to the course!" email prior to the semester starting), so I've got some catching-up to do. Should be pretty easy, luckily. It's Textual Research Methods, which is something I'm halfway decent at.

Actually, I've been loving all my classes this semester so far. Since my basics are behind me and I'm more used to the way this school works now, I'm having fun! Imaginative Writing is, as you could probably imagine, my favorite so far. The professor is amazing and laid-back and encourages intermingling with one another, so I've made acquaintances with lots of people in there already.

And we had to read the first two paragraphs of a class-prompted story yesterday, and no one seemed particularly off-put by mine, so that's always good. There's lots of really talented writers in this class. It's a little intimidating.

Hell yeah good luck Peaches!! Good luck. Playing catch-up can be annoying, but it sounds like you've got it under control. And showing others your writing is always super nerve-wracking, but you're a good author!! You got this indeed :D

    Semi-related story:
I had a fictional writing class online once, where we had to write a short story as our final project. So I used my longtime OC's that I drop into random AUs all the time, and I said "okay one constant is always that Eiji is adopted, so I'll have him and his boyfriend Seth go to meet his biological father. That'd be a nice short story". And it was fine, and people mostly praised it, blah blah blah. Then the professor wrote her feedback, giving me like a low A or something on the rough draft, saying that if I wanted to get across Seth and Eiji's brotherly love, I needed to work a little harder, etc. I was so stunned. Eiji and Seth have different last names, are different nationalities, are overtly (but casually) romantic, and Seth mentions getting Eiji's adopted dad's permission to propose someday soon. I was so off-put by her apparent lack of actually reading, that I just made 0 edits and resubmitted my draft as the final paper, and evidently she didn't read it then either, as she gave me 100 on that one. It was a TRIP.

Oh my GOD. That's spectacular! I've actually got a bit of an inverse issue: I have some characters who I've been touching up here and there for the past decade, and the last time I showed anybody something I'd written for it, someone made a comment about the casual nature of these two girls' romantic relationship. Their relationship is meant to be strictly (but strongly) sisterly, and one of them even gets with another girl later on down the road...

I'm glad you at least got a well-deserved 100 on it! That's the best possible outcome when you've got a professor that does jack-all.

Wow that's crazy! Some people really can't read context can they?? That's both awful and kinda funny ngl 😂

    Yes! I'm glad LOL.
IA went up to $36 overnight... I'm conflicted. On the one hand, more money that I make back! On the other, she might end up not being as cheap as I'd hoped, meaning she's out of range for a lot of potential buyers, and that makes me feel like a jerk...
    Leon
    Leon
Not at all, she's an expensive product and is well worth it! On Buyee she'd probably have hit 70 by now!

Don't feel bad about it, 40 dollars is still super cheap for a Vocaloid.
On a less conflicted note, IA's still sitting just above $20. Lowering the price was a great move, I think! There's five days left if you wanna bid! (I'm considering waiving the shipping if someone from here ends up getting her, but 1.) I'm not sure how to go about that and 2.) I don't know if that's legal... and I set shipping at $5, so I guess it depends on whether that would make a difference or not...)

My Godawful cover of Cantarella Grace Edition got 3 MyLists on Nico in under 12 hours! My emotions are a little mixed, but I think I'm happy. Maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought it was?

Thank you! Still, it certainly wasn't good, and one of the best cover artists on the scene posting a cover of the exact same arrangement of the exact same song using the exact same video three hours after posting mine just made it even worse.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why it's gotten better feedback on Nico: there's no other cover to immediately compare it to, so they don't realize just how bad it is... ah well. Even if it's cheating, it's a win.
So I've somehow managed to get myself into a conversation in what I think is Cantonese but might be Taiwanese Mandarin. Help.

(I say Taiwanese Mandarin because 靠北 is used to describe Spongebob's laugh, and according to the sources I typically use it's Taiwanese slang for "to rattle on," which describes his laugh really well. I thought the clip itself was in Cantonese because of the way Spongebob's name is pronounced - though I'm not entirely sure I'm hearing it correctly...)

Here's the clip in reference, if anyone wants to help a confused white girl learn to differentiate Cantonese and Mandarin.

    ___
Oh cmon, I bet you could just overhear some conversation in a forgein language in a bus or something and you'd learn the whole language from that

Also I've been wondering...you could theoretically make mandarin loids sing in Cantonese easily right? Or are they missing some phonemes for that?
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
I would guess so? All I know is Cantonese and Mandarin speakers can typically understand each other in writing but not so much in speech. (The best equivalent I could think of is maybe Spanish vs. Italian, but even that might be... I don't know. I'm not very good at language. English vs. German might work, but that's a little more drastic in that German's still hard for English speakers to read.) One big difference is that Cantonese is more tonal than Mandarin, but since (I think) tones tend to be omitted in singing, I'd think it would be possible.

Okay! I messed up. It's in Taiwanese Mandarin. I went through a few more clips on that channel and they definitely pronounce his name Haimian. I looked up a clip from the Cantonese dub for comparison and this ain't it.

Why does it take so long to upload videos to Nico... I'm trying to catch up, and I'm tired and wanna get to bed, so I tried uploading two at a time, one in each tab. One of them finished rendering - aaaaand promptly forced me out because of the whole "two different tabs" thing.

The other one's finishing up, and then I've got two more go after it. I wanna go to BED DAMMIT.

Alright. IA's back up, and this time, her starting bid is... wait for it... $10! Given the lack of interest shown during her first listing, I doubt it'll go much higher than that, so if you'd like a cheap Vocaloid, this is a good opportunity!
I'm thinking at this point no one's gonna take IA. So! New plan: once the auction expires (or I might go ahead and take her down now), I'm gonna list her way lower. Will I get my money back? No. But I WILL give someone the opportunity to get a popular Vocaloid dirt-cheap, and that makes up for it I think.

It's just IA V3, not her Rock bank right....? If you want I can maybe buy her on the 30th for like $50 or if you want for $60. : O
I been deciding which female Vocaloid to get or if to save the money for Miku or for a Vocaloid sale.

Nah, it's fine! I'm actually already relisting her. I know you've been saving, so I'd hate for you to throw that much money towards a vocal you haven't really shown interest in. Thank you though!
