Honestly, that’s what I was thinking. He sounds like unseasoned chicken tastes: it fills an empty spot but isn’t exactly satisfying. To be honest I’m kind of annoyed at it. 😆 I’m holding off on full judgement until we hear his vocal modes. I’d love to be surprised! I just wish we could get this voice type from a company that ISN’T notorious for rebranding the same three voice types over and over. Time will tell how he turns out.
I don’t see it as annoying, but instead disappointed.

Disappointing! That’s a very good way to put it. By default he strikes me as Kevin, but Shouty. After the bombshell that was Asterian, it’s certainly a let-down, because we know SynthV is capable of handling unique masculine vocals, yet we’re getting more of the exact same.

Eclipse Sounds has released Asterian's bonus files, and there is a survey you can fill out to give feedback on their voices/what you like and are looking for. Definitely go give them your thoughts!

bonus files include:
  • The reference artwork for ASTERIAN's character mascot, illustrated by Superstellar
  • Two new dictionaries that facilitate usage of ASTERIAN and SOLARIA in two additional languages: German and Italian (using English phonetics) - these were created programmatically and so will not be perfect in every circumstance, but should be a good base to build off of for non-supported language usage in these two languages.
  • Usage reference files for ASTERIAN's 5 pre-release demo songs, with versions optimized for both Synthesizer V Studio Basic and Synthesizer V Studio Pro

I literally made a prediction in the 2023 Vocal Synth Predictions thread that German support would become a thing in commercial synths, then a German dictionary using English phonemes drops for Asterian and Solaria. It's nowhere near the same as SynthV having native German support, but I'm happy to accept a dictionary at this time.

Since we're at the beginning of a new year, I felt like writing a 2022 'round up' of informal reviews for all the SynthV's I've spent a lot of time with. It'll be interesting to come back and see if my feelings change in future years. :solaria_ani_lili:

FENG YI: This year's surprise favourite. Initially I thought she was much too similar to Qing Su, but on deeper listening she delivers a delicate, ethereal performance unlike any other SynthV. She can't do it all, but when she's in her element, she shines. Actually having a voice that's less 'poppy' has opened up the music I can tackle considerably. In my opinion she's one of the best soft voices on SynthV currently, and manages to have some solidity when the music calls for more oomf. Probably one of the most emotional sounding voicebanks, my only gripe is that she sometimes swallows her aspirated consonants.

ANRI: I didn't have strong negative feelings towards her voice, but Anri's been the vocal I've most often heard and thought 'this song would sound better with someone else'. Most vocal synth music calls for some power, but it's not just that she's soft. Even on tracks that call for a soft voice, Anri often feels out of place with her deadpan, talk-singing style vocals. Anri's performance feels comparable to a vocalist who lacks confidence, struggling to emote and petering off notes. I go back and forth on whether she's specialised for a particular genre, or just a weaker product. But, I can see why a producer would choose her. Whereas most SynthV's feel like listening to a human, Anri sounding more classically 'Vocaloidy' would be appealing to fans of older vocal synths. Luka has many of the same limitations as Anri, and a strong fanbase for that unique sound.

SOLARIA: Even though she's not my personal dream absolute favo voicetype, the community needed a versatile pop vocalist desperately. Even with all of Dreamtonics' releases this year, there would still be a major hole in the SynthV lineup without Solaria. Having such a wide range of vocal modes and being responsive to parameters, means I can rely on her to fit where no one else will. Then there's how often she's used in tandem with V6's Vocalochanger, Vocal Morphing, or as input audio for Diff-SVC: Solaria's been carrying the English side on her shoulders. Getting a clear, flexible voice capable of being powerful or soft was a godsend.

NATALIE: She had a rocky release, and in my opinion is somewhat underrated because of it. There aren't many vocal synth songs coming from the community that suit her, but I've seen a positive response to Natalie from the professional side; and I can see why. She's a good counterpart to Solaria, providing a richer, more soulful tone great for genres like RnB, modern lo-fi hip hop, classic soul and jazz. For that slower, more classic sound; Natalie is a winner. Between her and Solaria, you could cover both sides of popular music.

ASTERIAN and Cong Zheng are also SynthV's I'm keeping an eye on, but they're still in the first impressions phase. I'm excited to get to know their voices better in 2023!

nice to hear another demo! im also kinda glad he didnt come out so quickly after that initial demo (as i feel dreamtonics has a habit of that- sudden demo and sudden release, which is a problem with how i often find bugs and quality issues.... heres to hoping this guy is taking some more time due to his unique sound being tweaked?)

hes a voice that feels very specific for his genre, and i think thats good to have. there will undoubetly be people who think hes not useful because of that but, he will be intriguing for the people who do want a voice like that! and thats good to see especially from dreamtonics and their streak of same-y voices lol

I do appreciate that he's more of a departure from DT's usual three voicetypes! I reeeeaaaaaaally wish they'd have trials or SOMETHING for their letter series, because I think this guy could theoretically pull off lighter forms of metal, but I don't wanna make a whole file just to have someone else plug it in. I'll be keeping my eye on him!

I was just gonna mention the same comments. It does sound a little like him lol.

It it sounds like he can scream, so I'm pleased.
I think I need Jack Black as a voice synth....

NVM, ignore me. Carry on.

For the sake of being on-topic, I can hear the similarity, too. (I also sorta hear a nasal Vin Diesel on the lower notes, but I'm sure I'm the only one with that delusion/deafness....)

We need someone to do a Jack Black diff SVC for yesterday T^T
